Some men may have one or both breasts abnormally large. This condition, known as gynecomastia, can be caused by a hormone imbalance or being overweight, which can increase estrogen levels and cause breast tissue to grow.
For men with gynecomastia, breast reduction surgery is an option. It can also be used to tighten the breast area after significant weight loss that causes sagging skin. However, surgery is not suitable for men who have large breasts only because of their excess weight. Breast reduction surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia.
The operation includes:
- making an incision around the nipple
- Removal of excess fat with a scalpel or removal with liposuction (a combination of both techniques can be used) is the repositioning of the nipples if too much tissue needs to be removed.
Your incisions will be covered with dressings after the surgery.
The operation takes about 1.5 hours. You usually need to stay in the hospital overnight.
